The textile industry of Pakistan is facing severe energy crisis, as a result situation makes people to focus their attention on some sustainable energy resources for their survival. Biomass is considered to be the major potential source for energy production. Numerous ranges of biomass utilization technologies are available to produce useful energy from biomass. Other than direct combustion, anaerobic digestion (Biogas) and ethanol production, thermal gasification is one of the most important techniques for the conversion of these materials into combustible gas (producer gas).  Hence, gasification of biomass into producer gas enhances its potential as a renewable energy resource. This paper gives a comprehensive review of the biomass fuels, available gasification technologies, their limitations and utilizing producer gas as fuel for I.C. engines.
