Biomass Gasification Technology a Fuel Source for Internal Combustion Engines

Abstract


The textile industry of Pakistan is facing severe energy crisis, as a result situation makes people to focus their attention on some sustainable energy resources for their survival. Biomass is considered to be the major potential source for energy production. Numerous ranges of biomass utilization technologies are available to produce useful energy from biomass. Other than direct combustion, anaerobic digestion (Biogas) and ethanol production, thermal gasification is one of the most important techniques for the conversion of these materials into combustible gas (producer gas).  Hence, gasification of biomass into producer gas enhances its potential as a renewable energy resource. This paper gives a comprehensive understanding of the biomass fuels, available gasification technologies, their limitations and utilizing producer gas as fuel for I.C. engines. The producer used as fuel for internal combustion engines is characterized with heating value, methane number, laminar flame speed and concentration of pollutants.
