A Study of Sedimentation of rod like particles

Abstract


In this study, we performed direct numerical simulations (DNS), using smooth profile method (SPM) to explore the properties of rod like particle while sedimenting in   a Newtonian fluid.  In SPM, we used modify Navier Stokes equation (NS)  for the fluid domain and Newton equation is used to track the particle trajectories and their velocities. Particle boundaries are represented by smoothly spreading continuous interface so that NS  can be solved on entire domain and rigidity of particles is introduced in modified NS. Furthermore, we represented the rod like particles made by three spherical beads, rigidly attached with each other.

 

The main theme of this study is to understand the dynamics of non-spherical particles, especially rod shaped particles, which have wide range of application in pharmaceutical, pulp making, petro-chemical and bio-engineering industries. There is a limited work on non-spherical particles, the detailed dynamics is still open for researchers.

In this study [1,2], we explored the effects of particle volume fraction on static and dynamic properties of the particles. We focused on the orientation, microstructure, velocity fluctuation and diffusion of particles, as a function of particle volume fraction.
