Abstract

The research study focused on the production of activated carbon by physico-chemical treatment of lawny grass. Acid washed grass was first dried and then physically activated with CO2 to convert it into porous carbon at different temperatures in the tube furnace. The synthesized activated carbon was characterized using scanning electron microscopy for surface morphology (SEM), thermos-gravimertic analysis (TGA) to explore thermal degradation, BET for porosity determination. The materials were also characterized through FTIR Spectroscopy to observe functional groups on the surface of carbon. The porosity analysis showed that the surface area of produced carbon was raised to 200 m2/g as compared to its initial surface area which was only 0.4 m2/g. Amorphous and crystalline structure of Activated carbon was studied by using X-ray Diffraction instrument (XRD). The characterization results showed that the synthesized activated carbon from lawny grass could serve as cheap source of activated carbon.
