Abstract

Grease was first used by the Egyptians on their chariot axles more than 3000 years ago. Today, over 80% of the world’s bearings are being lubricated with grease and it can be justifying to say that the modern world cannot simply function with the absence of grease.  A variety of grease types are available in the market and about a million tonnes of grease is being required annually.

Grease is mainly composed of three parts, a lubricating fluid, a thickener and an additive. Many types of greases are available in the market which include Calcium Soap Grease, Sodium Soap Grease, Mixed Soap Grease, Complex Soap Grease and Non-Soap Greases and a whole more, each having distinct characteristics and specific uses as per their properties. Variance of these integral parts gives us a wide variety of greases. In this article we have discussed study of Variance of these integral parts of Grease to produce different qualities of grease for different uses. Many of the integral characteristics observed during selection of grease include viscosity, dropping point, shear stability etc.

Many types of Tests as proposed by ASTM or IP are performed to ensure the high performance and characteristics of grease. And after that, conclusions are made on the basis of no of quality tests passed. From the experiments, we conclude that high viscous grease is most recommended for most operations.
