Abstract

Packaging industry plays vital role in the economy of Pakistan. Food packaging has various health and environmental issues based on their standard properties. Most of the food grade plastic packaging needs excellent barrier properties to improve the shelf life of food items.

The main objective of our work is to analyze   the difference between the  barrier properties of non-metallized and metallized Cast Polypropylene (CPP) films. Cast polypropylene (CPP) films are produced by standard industrial method of cast extrusion process with chill rollers. The influence of non-metallized  and  metalized on gas and water  were tested using ASTM standard methods. The barrier properties ie oxyegen transmission rate(OTR) & Water transmission rate(WTR) of both types films were estimated. It was estimated that the CPP films produced without any coating material has less barrier properties as compared the films metalized. The obtained barier properties data were considered from the practical point of view. It is therefore concluded that metalized CPP films are more suitable for food packaging industry.
