Abstract

Municipal solid waste generation capacity of Lahore is more than 6500 tons/day.  Only a meager amount of it is utilized for useful purposes (energy sectors), the rest is wasted or dumped.

Present strategy for fixing this large amount of biomass is only land filling/ dumping. This technique is resulting into numerous problems such as; land pollution with toxins and leachate, environment pollution due to release of greenhouse gases and health problems.

Therefore, to cope with detrimental effects of aforementioned technique, the need of alternate techniques for solid waste management prevails. This paper will discuss possible routes for conversion of trash into greener fuel and other chemical with fewer emissions. This study also debate, the practical example of mega project in Pakistan, utilizing waste to energy.
