Effect of aging time on the mechanical and corrosion properties of aluminum silicon alloy

Abstract


Automotive and aerospace industries have found numerous applications of aluminum silicon alloys due to their light weight, corrosion and wear resistance and excellent mechanical properties. In present work we prepared aluminum silicon alloy with 4 % silicon content using pure aluminum and aluminum silicon master alloy in pit furnace. To study the effect of heat treatment on mechanical and corrosion properties, the cut samples were first solution treated at 560 0C for two hours and then quenched in water. The quenched samples were then aged at 180 0C for three different time periods (2, 4, 6 hours). Mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, percentage elongation and hardness were determined before and after aging for different time periods. Electrochemical Testing was done by Gamary Potentiostat. It was observed that in general tensile and yield strengths were increased by aging however elongation was decreased. However, it was also observed that strength was increased as the aging time was increased up to 4 hours but after 4 hours of aging it started to decrease. Corrosion testing revealed that the corrosion rate was decreased by increase in aging time.
