Abstract


CO2 mitigation from environment and controlling its release are a necessary commission globally. Cost effective solutions for CO2 capture are sought to protect environment. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) are a promising materials for this purpose as they combine attributes of organic and inorganic counterparts. Innovative materials are being used to produce high performance membranes. This study reports simultaneous improvement in CO2 permeability and selectivity employing a novel ionic liquid (IL), ZIF-8 and polysulfone as polymer matrix. Synthesized membranes are characterized and investigated for separation of CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 gas mixtures at ambient and elevated temperatures. Single and mixed gas permeation results showed their outstanding performance exhibiting a simultaneous upsurge in CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivity. Such membranes can be utilized for post combustion and natural gas sweetening processes.
