Abstract

Filter Press mud is an important and widely available solid waste obtained from the sugar industry. It is used as an agricultural supplement to enhance the nutrient value in soils and have great potential to produce energy through combustion and gasification. In this study, ultimate and proximate analysis (CHNSO and volatile matter, fixed carbon, ash content) is determined to know the compositional analysis of the press mud. The thermal gravimetric analysis is used to determine the mass  rate loss and removal rate of volatile components from the mud at 25 C to 1000 C at the heating rate of 10 C/min in a nitrogen environment. Three kinetic models were used on the TGA data to determine the activation energy and order of the reaction by Arrhenius, Coats Redfom, and Friedman differential iso-conventional model. Analysis of press mud showed the high heating value of 14 MJ/kg by the bomb calorimeter. The energy gradient between heating value and activation energy shows the potential of the material for energy generation.
