Abstract

This study highlights the synergistic effect resulted by co-pyrolysis of Lakhra coal with sugarcane bagasse and wheat straw. To investigate the synergistic effect blends were made and subjected to low temperature pyrolysis in temperature range of 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600ºC in an inert atmosphere of N2 with programmed heating rate of 10ºC per minute. The optimum results were observed at 500 ºC temperature with residence time of 1 hour showing favorable synergistic conditions. Regarding the sulfur content in coal, a reduction in blend residue of coal with sugarcane bagasse and coal with wheat straw has been observed as 73.22% and 74%, whereas GCV of the coal (5817 Kcal/Kg) increased to 5981 Kcal/Kg and 6056 Kcal/Kg respectively. Hence, the blend residues showed better results compared to coal only under similar experimental conditions. Based on the results, it may also be concluded that the wheat straw is a better energy source as compared to sugarcane bagasse when blended with coal and it may be safely used in energy recovery schemes.
