Adepoju Oluwasanumi A., Adamu Joshua R.

Abstract

The study brought into focus how some teacher factors can be used to predict teacher absenteeism. A Multistage stratified random sampling procedure was used in selecting the study sample which comprised four hundred and thirty nine (439) teachers from twenty six (26) public secondary schools in Gombe State, Nigeria. An instrument dubbed teacher absenteeism proforma, which was designed by the researchers was used for data collection. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict teachers’ absenteeism from the following nine teacher factors: school location, teacher age, marital status, gender, academic qualification, possession of professional training in teaching, grade level, years of teaching experience, and extent of involvement in farming activities. These teacher variables statistically, significantly predicted teachers’ absenteeism, F (9, 429) = 15.546, p< .0005, R 2 = 0.246. The results further indicated that only school location and extent of involvement in farming activities made significant contributions to the explanations of the variations in teachers’ absenteeism (at p< 0.05). The implications of the findings of this study especially as regards the needs for researches to understand teachers’ prime motives contributory to absenteeism so as to be able to enhance teachers’ proper attitude was emphasised.
