Religiously Modified Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for School Teenagers with Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Abstract


The question in this paper is whether religiously modified cognitive behavior therapy can be effective for teenagers with ADHD. Previous studies were mostly conducted in western countries and different religious faiths were linked with psychotherapy or clinical practices. This paper attempts to present a model of religiously modified cognitive behavior therapy for school teenagers with ADHD in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, and to find out its effects on ADHD symptoms scores and academic achievements scores. The treatment procedure consisted of 20 religious training sessions to teenagers of ADHD group and their parents. Academic achievement was checked with pre-test and posttest scores, while ADHD symptoms were checked via Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Rating Scales in a clinical laboratory. While applying Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test, we found significant effect on ADHD symptoms scores as well as academic achievement scores (W= 0 and P= 137). Results suggest that useful religious norms and principles, strictly adopted by teenagers and parents, may have positive effects on behavior modification and academic achievement. This model of religiously modified CBT is considered to be reliable for the families, durable in the long run and justified in all its technicalities
