Rumi Studies in Subcontinent
Abstract
Maulana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi, one of the most significant Persianmystics and poets, has glaringly influenced the writers, poets, scholars,mystics, and the eloquent speakers of the subcontinent over the past eightcenturies. During this extended period, no writer or poet can be found whowas not influenced by the celestial thoughts and the delightful heavenlyideas, perceived in the poetry of Rumi. In the subcontinent, the tremendoustradition of Rumi studies began at the end of the seventh century AH, whenIraqi Hamedani, Rumi’s contemporary mystic poet, composed excitingexpressive poems following the themes of Rumi, in the ancient city ofMultan. In the following era, there seems no drop in the acknowledgment ofRumi’s stature and reception, in this part of the world. In this article, theimplication of the history of Rumi’s reception in the subcontinent isintroduced, analyzed, and discussed. Some important works such astranslations, commentaries, and critique in the field of Rumi studies havealso been discussed. In addition to that, some contemporary Rumi scholarshave been mentioned. Moreover, the future possibilities of Rumi Studies,largely in the subcontinent, and predominantly in Pakistan have beendeliberated.Keywords: Rumi, Subcontinent, Past, Present & Future.
