The life history and works of Qudsi Mashhadi

Abstract


This article has been written about the life history and works ofQudsiMashhadi. Haji Muhammad JaanQudsiMashhadi is one of theprominent (renowned) poets of Sabaq e Hindi (Hindi style of Poetry) ofEleventh (A.H.). He belonged to Safwi era. QudsiMashhadi was the leaderof retailer shopkeepers of Mashhad, and later he was appointed at the postof treasurer of Astana Quds Rizvi; because he was the devotee Eighth ImamAli Raza A.S. this is why he kept pen-nameQudsi. He gained the felicity ofHajj in youth. After the death of his son, he adopted the way of Hindustanlike other poets in 1042 (A.H.). Here, he reached in the service of AbdullahKhan Feroz Jang and he was associated with the court of Shah Jahan withhis support.He received valuable rewards and gifts on different occasionsdue to his command of expression in the court of Shah Jahan. He was afellow-rider of Shah Jahan during the voyage of Kashmir. He wroteMasnaviya( verses comprising couplets) in the praise of Kashmir.He was appointed by Shah Jahanto write Shah Nama, but his age did notremain faithful to him and this work was not finished. Shah Nama Qudsi isrenowned by the name of the victories of Shah Jahan “ Zafarnama ShahJahani”. Qudsi died in 1056 (A.H.). Some biographers mention his grave inLahore and others in Kashmir. They also say that his bones had beentransferred to Mashhad. The collected odds of Qudsi consists of odds,verses comprising couplets, amatory verses, stanzas ending with couplets,stanzas with the same refrain, and quatrains. His works have characteristicsof newness, the novelty of subjects, and the usage of poetical images.Qudsiearned much fame in odds and verses comprising couplets.The life history and works of Qudsi have been considered the subject ofdiscussion in this article.Keywords: Qudsi Mashhadi, Life History, Mashhad, Hindustan, Works,Odds, Verse comprising Couplets,Amatory Verses
