Influence of different farm substrates on protein content and yield of Pleurotus tuberregium (Fr.) Sing. sclerotia

Nneka V. Chiejina

Abstract

The influence of seven farm substrates supplemented with fermented sawdust on protein content and yield of Pleurotus tuberregium (Fr.) Sing. sclerotia were investigated. Equal weights of each substrate were mixed together with same weight of fermented sawdust to give a treatment. The highest fresh weight yield was obtained from sclerotia grown in fermented sawdust alone  while the least was from those grown in a rice bran and fermented sawdust mixture. No sclerotia were produced by topsoil and fermented sawdust and oil palm fruit fibre and fermented sawdust substrates. Sclerotia harvested from fermented sawdust substrate gave the highest percentage biological efficiency while the least was from sclerotia harvested from the mixture of chopped corn straw and fermented sawdust substrate. Sclerotia grown in the mixture of rice bran and fermented sawdust gave the highest protein content while the least was from those harvested from fermented sawdust substrate alone. Considering all the parameters investigated, corn waste and fermented sawdust substrate is recommended as the best substrate for the production of P. tuberregium sclerotia.
