Distribution of filamentous fungi in different industrial effluents
Abstract
Many of the remediation technologies currently being used involve not only physical and chemical treatments, but also biological processes. Fungi have unique bioremediation properties. The aim of the present work was to derive information about the fungal community structure in textile, glass, pharmaceutical and paper industries effluents to provide a base for further attempts on the bioremediation technology. A total of 6 fungal genera were identified from glass, pharmaceutical, paper mill and textile effluent samples. A total of 12 fungal species were isolated from textile effluent. Aspergillus was found to occur in maximum percentage (35%) followed by Penicillium (30%) Fusarium (10%), Absidia (10%) Gibberella and Rhizopus (5%) species. Fusarium camptocera, Gibberella baccata, Aspergillus fumigatus, A. niger, A. phoenicis, A. terreus, Penicillium digitatum, P. implicatum, P. lenosum, P. oxalicum and P. verrucosum are the most important addition in effluent mycoflora from Pakistan.
