Associate Professor
Dr. Mehboob Ahmed

After getting his Masters in botany with specialization in microbiology, Dr. Mehboob got HEC scholarship for PhD and joined Prof. Dr. Shahida Hasnain’s lab in University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. In his PhD research work, he got opportunity to work with the only oxygenic photosynthetic prokaryotes present on this planet earth i.e. the Cyanobacteria. They are the largest and ecologically most successful prokaryotes on the Earth. Due to their considerable morphological, physiological and ecological diversity they are considered a tough target for isolation, purification and then subsequent culturing. In his PhD, he remained involved in the Isolation, Purification and Culturing of cyanobacteria from different habitats including agricultural and fresh water samples. Furthermore he deeply studied their molecular interactions with crop plants. During his PhD studies, he got chance to work in Prof. Dr. Lucas J. Stal lab (Department of Marine Microbiology, CEME, NIOO-KNAW (now NIOZ), Netherlands) under the International Research Support Initiative Program of HEC and further improved his expertise in cyanobacterial culturing and developing and maintaining their axenic cultures, various imaging and analytical techniques. Since completion of his PhD in 2011, he continued his research with cyanobacteria in different biotechnological aspects. One of his ongoing projects is to screen and use potential biodiesel producing microalgae (chlorophyta and cyanophyta) from different aquatic habitats of Pakistan. Other aspects are use of cyanobacteria in cosmetics, accessing harmful effects of cyanobacterial toxins (cyanotoxins) and application of cyanobacteria in food and agricultural biotechnology. His second area of research is Bioinformatics/Computational biology. In this area he is doing research in two aspects i.e. Phylogenoimic or evolutionary studies and In-silico Drug designing. He has expertise in various bioinformatics tools and statistical analysis of biological data. He has represented University of the Punjab in more than Hundred national and international conferences/ workshops/seminars. He has delivered more than Fifty lectures at national and international level. He has been awarded Erasmus Mundus Action 2, Experts Sustain, Academic Exchange Award in 2015 and ASMCUE Leadership Grant for International Educators for ASM Conference For Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) by American Society for Microbiology in 2016.
