Assistant Professor
Dr. Shabana

Dr. Shabana graduated (2005) from University of the Punjab with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry as the major subjects. She did MSc (2007) and MPhil (2010) in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. Her MPhil research focused on the role of some common SNPs in FTO gene in familial obesity. She did her PhD (2016) at the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics with some advanced work at University College London, UK sponsored by HEC IRSIP scholarship. In PhD, she investigated the role of selected mutations known to cause severe early onset obesity in Europeans and many common SNPs in a number of genes in the subjects of Pakistani ethnicity so as to identify the genetic contribution to obesity in this ethnic group. The results of her study showed that the contribution to common forms of obesity in Pakistan is due to additive effect of common SNPs in many genes i.e., the common forms of obesity are polygenic in nature. She was appointed as Lecturer at the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics , University of The Punjab in 2013 and was promoted as Assistant Professor in 2016.
