She joined the University of the Punjab as a Research Associate in the Centre for Advanced Molecular Biology (CAMB) in 1986. In 1987, she started working as a Research Scholar in the Dept. of Botany and then as a Research Associate in a PU-PAEC project. In 1988, she joined the Dept. of Botany as a Lecturer. She taught various subjects including Mycology, Plant Pathology, Phycology and Bryology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Autecology, Synecology and Ecosystems, Water Pollution to Under-graduate as well as Graduate classes. In 1997, she completed her PhD in Environmental Mycology with thesis titled ‘Ecology of Freshwater Hyphomycetes in some stream systems of Pakistan’.
She became Professor in the Dept. of Botany in 2004. In 2012 to 2015 she served as Principal of College of Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) and taught various subjects like Plants and Environment, Advanced Ecology, Soil Sciences, Environmental Biotechnology to Under-graduate and Graduate classes. In 2015, she joined the Dept. of Botany again. Eight students have completed their PhD research while eleven are carrying out their research under her supervision. She has also supervised 71 MS/MPhil and 61 MSc/ BS theses.
She is currently leading the Environmental Biotechnology Research Group in the University. Her specific areas of research include Taxonomy and Ecology of Aquatic Hyphomycetes, Phytoremediation, Assisted Phytoextraction, Sustainable Management of Hazardous and Agricultural Waste, Constructed Wetlands etc. She has approximately 95 publications to her credit. She has completed two HEC and two NDP projects, other than University projects. She has organized and attended many International Conferences and chaired relevant sessions.
