Abstract
This review article aims to address the problem of chloride-induced-corrosion of steel bars embedded in reinforced concrete (RCC). Chloride-induced corrosion of steel bars in RCC is one of the main concerns faced by the modern civil engineering today. Statistics have indicated that over 40 per cent of failure of the structures is due to the corrosion of steel reinforcement bars and this cost billions of dollars to the construction industry. It is believed that the corrosion initiates once the chloride concentration at the steel bar level exceeds a certain threshold value. Different models have been developed to predict the chloride ion concentration in concrete. The models are based on empirical as well as physical equations. Another important aspect of all these models is the determination of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete. This work also discusses the ways in which the diffusion coefficient of chloride is determined. Determination of diffusion coefficient by natural means, although correct, needs a lot of time of the order of several years. For this reason, researchers prefer to determine this parameter by accelerated methods. Nevertheless, the knowledge of the subject is important for the construction industry of Pakistan especially in areas where structures are subjected to chloride containing salts.
