Abstract

Chemical industries such as textile, leather tanning, and paper industries are responsible for water pollution that can affect nature and human beings. The pollutant laden water stream should be treated before releasing it to an aquatic atmosphere. The current research focuses the utilization of the boiler waste’s i.e. coal fly ash (CFA) to remove the Malachite Green (MG) dye from aqueous phase. Sodium and Lithium zeolites were synthesized from coal fly ash precursor by alkali fusion treatment at 600°C. Batch experiments were performed by using synthesized zeolites to study the effect of different parameters such as adsorbent dosage, time, initial concentration of MG dye solution and temperature. Sodium based zeolite was more efficient than lithium based fly ash zeolite. The kinetics of adsorption was considered using Pseudo first order and Pseudo second order models. Pseudo second order model well explained the adsorption mechanism. Equilibrium data was also analyzed by applying various Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption of dye was endothermic in nature.
