Abstract
Chlor-alkali industry is one of the largest electrochemical industry, the main products being chlorine and caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) generated simultaneously, by the electrolysis of sodium chloride. The process is energy intensive and Chlor-alkali industry is the second largest consumer of electricity next to aluminium in electrolytic industries. The products, chlorine and caustic soda, are indispensable intermediates in chemical and allied industries. Chlorine being used for manufacturing vinyl chloride, a monomer for a major plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is also used as disinfectant, as a bleaching agent and paper and pulp industry. Likewise caustic soda is used in mineral processing, in textile and glass manufacturing industry.
The study presents an overview of some key technological advancements in Chlor-alkali industry in Pakistan over a last couple of years. Furthermore, sustainability of the process along with their environmental implication are analysed. The potential for future investment in Chlor-Alkali business in Pakistan is discussed.
