Enhancing boiler efficiency through waste heat recovery

Abstract


Energy is one of the fundamental raw materials in chemical process industries. Moreover, conversion of energy from one form to another generates waste energy which effect overall efficiency of processes and also translates in economic terms.  Boilers produce steam by converting chemical energy of fuel into thermal energy. In recent times, boilers efficiency and economics play a key role with respect to World's depleting energy resources. Therefore, energy management is an important factor of cost reduction for the boilers operation, and great progress has been made in waste heat recovery in recent years.

With the advent of new technologies and developments, Fauji Fertilizer Company Ltd. [FFC] has continuously explored potential for better energy efficiency through an extensive energy conservation program since FFC-I commissioning in 1982. This program has resulted in various modifications including combustion air preheating with boilers CBD. Consequently, fuel [Natural Gas] saving is achieved with the reduction in plant energy footprint and ensured competitive edge through monetary gains.

This paper illustrates brief description of the project as per FFC energy conservation program and the benefits achieved. In 2013, the waste heat recovery project was implemented and meeting the expectations with respect to foreseen economic gains.
