Abstract

Porosity is an exceptional property for molecular materials but, surprisingly metal organic frameworks are found as materials which exhibit porosity as well as very high surface area. MOF's have been commonly used in gas separation, gas storage aand catalysis but, due to high porosity and high surface area they are now being widely used in microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration.

MOF-5 has been reported as a highly poros, thermally and chemically stable inorganic filler. MOF 5 based mixed matrix membranes are fabricated for solvent resistant nanofiltration. MOF-5 (Zn-BDC) is prepared by composing Zinc (II) clusters with terephtalic acid dianion as organic linker. MOF-5 nanoparticles were than dispersed in polymer solution of polyimide and NMP prior to cast the membranes. Mixed matrix membranes were than casted via phase inversion method. Effects of composition of MOF-5 on the performance of membranes were studied. The homogenous solution of methanol and Congo-red was subjected to filtration experiment. Solvent flux and solute rejection were determined. These mixed matrix membranes shown the better performance than that of simple polymeric membranes,

In past, MOF-5 has been used for storage of nitrogen and hydrogen gas and for catalysis as well. Use of MOF-5 in nanofiltration is a novel approach in current work showing comparitively good perfornace.
