EFFECT OF RICE HUSK ASH (RHA) ON PROPERTIES OF REFRACTORY WITH CLAY FOR PRODUCTION OF REFRACTORY BRICKS
Last modified: 2016-12-01
Abstract
The main objective of this thesis is to develop the refractory bricks from rice husk ashand clay. Rice husk ash additions were varied from 10 to 40 % in the samples.Chemical composition and mineralogy of rice husk ash and clay was studied by usingx-ray fluorescence (XRF) and x-ray diffraction XRD respectively in BESTWAYCEMENT LIMITED, Chakwal laboratory. Refractory properties such as linearshrinkage, apparent porosity, bulk density, cold crushing strength, thermal shockresistance and thermal conductivity were tested. The results were obtained comparedwith standard properties of fired clay bricks. All the values obtained from samples arewithin the range for medium strength refractory bricks. Results shows that whenpercentage addition of RHA increased apparent porosity increase while apparentdensity decrease. Higher ratio of RHA results in lower compressive strength but theseresults meets the standards for clay fired brick. Durability and resistance against acidattack is excellent. Linear shrinkage of these bricks is lower than clay fired bricks sothese bricks do not change their shapes after firing in furnace at high temperature.Hence, addition of rice husk ash to clay can be used for production of refractorybricks; it reduces clay consumption and environmental issues relating to dumping ofrice husk ash.
