Abstract
The aim of this research work was to investigate the polarization behavior of zinc based anode which was casted for the sacrificial cathodic protection of steel pipelines buried underground in soil. Simulated corrosion cell was developed in laboratory using acrylic box filled with soil in which zinc anode was buried along with bare steel pipeline and both were electrically connected through a copper wire. Three electrode potentiostat was used as a power tool to evaluate the corrosion potential, polarization behavior, kinetics of redox reactions of anode and cathode under sacrificial cathodic protection for a time period of three weeks. Open Circuit Potential (OCP), Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were the techniques used. The results were analyzed using Echem analyst software which showed a significant shift of corrosion potential in negative direction as well as decrease in corrosion current indicating effective sacrificial cathodic protection and less anodic consumption.
