Identification of Weld Discontinuities in 304L SS by Radiographic Testing (RT)
Abstract
Stainless steel 304L plates were welded by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). The single V grooved butt joint design was prepared to produce intentional discontinuities within the weld by varying welding parameters. These plates were then subjected to NDT Inspection. Radiographic Testing (RT) results showed clear welding discontinuities. It was concluded that decrease in weld speed, variation in electrode angle and absence of shielding gas caused under cutting, excess of penetration, hot cracking, pin holes, lack of fusion. The detailed study of PQR and WPS, the causes and remedies to avoid such imperfections were suggested.
