Abstract


José Saramago is one of the most important international writers of the last hundred years,born in Portugal in 1922.He was in his sixties when he came to prominence as a writer with the publication of Baltasar and Blimunda. A huge body of work followed, translated into more than forty languages, and in 1998 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.In this article, we have discussed the system of symbols in José Saramago’ snovel Blindness. This novel was published in 1995, but it was translated into Urdu by Ahmad Mushtaq in 2011.  The characters in the novel do not have specific names, which has increased the element of symbolism.In this novel, two basic human instincts, hunger and sex, are examined by symbols.Saramago died in June 2010.
