Professional Development of Elementary School Teachers Through In-Service Training: A Quantitative Study in District Lahore

Abstract


Teaching profession demands competency and knowledge of the subject matter catering needs of the specific level of the students. Considering the importance of this profession, national professional standards for professional development of teachers have been developed and provincial governments are responsible to provide in-service teacher training including elementary teachers serving in education department. The teachers’ training institutions at federal and provincial levels are making efforts to provide in-service training. In accordance to professional standards teachers may play pivotal role to uplift education standard by holding critical place to impart knowledge. This study was designed to analyze the effects of in- service training of elementary teachers on their professional development. All the public sectors elementary school were the target population of the study. Population of the study was only (75) male and female secondary schools in district Lahore. Through the Simple random sampling technique was used to collect data from (95 male & 105 female) elementary teachers serving in public sector schools. The findings of the study indicate that in-service teachers training has positive effects on professional development of teachers by enhancing subject matter knowledge in field, human growth and development, instructional planning strategies, assessment and communication skills of the learners.
